Before You Increase the Marketing Budget, Find the Constraint

Increasing marketing spend can amplify a working system—or make an unresolved constraint more expensive. Start by finding what is actually limiting performance.

When performance disappoints, increasing spend is one of the easiest actions to approve—and one of the easiest ways to make an unresolved problem more expensive.

Start with the constraint

The weak point may be acquisition, but it may also be positioning, the offer, website conversion, lead qualification, follow-up, sales capacity or retention. More media cannot repair every one of those problems.

Ask leadership-level questions

  • Are we reaching the wrong audience or failing to convert the right one?
  • Does the market understand why the offer is meaningfully different?
  • Where exactly do qualified prospects drop from the journey?
  • Can we connect spend to commercial movement rather than platform activity?
  • What would have to be true for additional spend to create healthy incremental growth?

The decision is not “should we spend more?” until the business has a reasonable view of what additional spend is expected to amplify.

Use the Marketing Performance Assessment if you want a structured starting point for finding the questions worth investigating.

FROM READING TO DECISION

Useful thinking should change what happens next.

If this question is live inside your business, the next step is to put the specific context around it—market, offer, numbers, constraints and timing.
