The Cost of Trying to Position a Business for Everyone

Trying to be relevant to everyone can make a business less compelling to the customers it most wants to win.

Broad positioning can feel commercially safe because it avoids excluding potential customers. In practice, it often makes the business harder to understand and easier to compare on price.

Relevance usually requires specificity

A prospective customer is trying to answer a simple question: is this company particularly appropriate for my situation? When the message is written to include every industry, every need and every buyer, the answer often becomes less obvious.

The company may technically serve a wide market while still choosing to lead with the situations where it creates the strongest value.

Broad capability is not the same as broad positioning

A business can retain a wide delivery capability and still be selective about the market story it tells. Positioning is not a complete inventory of everything the company can do. It is the decision about what the company wants to be known for first.

The hidden costs of saying everything

  • Website copy becomes longer but less memorable.
  • Sales teams invent their own versions of the value proposition.
  • Campaigns require different messages for every audience.
  • Proof becomes scattered because no single story accumulates enough evidence.
  • Prospects struggle to understand why the business is preferable to a generalist alternative.

Specificity creates the risk of leaving some demand outside the lead message. But ambiguity creates a different risk: being technically relevant to many people and compelling to very few.

The leadership question is not “who can we sell to?” It is “for whom should we be easiest to choose?”

FROM READING TO DECISION

Useful thinking should change what happens next.

If this question is live inside your business, the next step is to put the specific context around it—market, offer, numbers, constraints and timing.
